Quilt batting.
If you feel the need to stay with sponge material, I would look at some of the Pond filter sponges. Or a little of each, some batting sitting on sponge. That was what I had in my wet/dry, and it worked well, and didn`t empty my wallet. BTW: I never changed the sponge, I just cleaned it.
