I would think your current measures should deal with that and I would expect to see signs of improvement within a week. As for the water changes I think they're coming at it from the other direction. I suspect there isn't a problem with doing more than they say, but in the absence of them providing any reasoning behind their instructions I would stick to the instructions as closely as possible. If amonia/nitrite build-up are a concern (as they often are with temporary setups) use Prime to neutralize.
