    Default Driftwood question

Hi there! I just acquired a 75g tank and im new to this hobby. I bought a big driftwood to match my holey stone black sand setup. Now some people are saying that driftwoods are bad for cichlids as it lowers the ph level of the water plus it just makes the water yellowish. Your thoughts? Thanks

Driftwood can definitely do that, and for quite some time, however if you bought it from a fishkeeping hobby store it's possible (but not guaranteed) that it may already have been soaked long enough to leach out most of the tannins. If you keep cichlids from low PH regions (eg many South American cichlids) it might not be such a concern. With African rift lake cichlids more caution is advised. You can try it and monitor the PH frequently, and remove it if it is causing significant PH swings and preventing you from keeping the PH where you want it. PH swings are a source of stress to the fish. If your tank contains recently introduced fish you particularly want to keep unnecessary stressers to a minimum. If you have a separate container you can submerge the wood in for a week or two, with some current (eg: from a powerhead or spare filter), you could test it out without worrying about your fish. The container should not be one that has been used for household cleaning purposes or to store any substances that may be toxic to your fish ; something considered safe for food or potable water is a pretty sure bet. If it does cause the PH to drop you have the option of continuing to soak it longer, periodically replacing the water, until the wood no longer causes the PH to drop. (How long that might be is rather unpredictable though.)
