    Default Few Questions NEWBIE here!

Hi! Im new to this. I am going to purchase a Oscar and Pleco tommorow. The oscar i will be purchasing is about 2 inches. Their are a Peppermint pleco and a common Pleco. Which one will go best with my oscar? The peppermints are rather large at the store. The commons are small like the oscar. Also My PH in my tank constantly rises and then lowers. I just tested it and is 7.6! I Just want to know why this happens with the Ph. and how to prevent and how to get rid of this problem.
    Thanks in Advance

    Happy Fish!

    Hello,
I think that you can go with wichever Pleco you like the look of best. Even though the one species is bigger than the oscar, the oscar will catch up to it & the pleco won't bother the oscar.

One suggestion I would make is to be patient & wait until your ph stops fluctuating. I wouldn't worry about the 7.6 though. That's neutral.

how big is the tank? you really need 125 gallons or more for oscars--they get huge really fast from what i understand. do some reading in the american forum to get some ideas.

You Know I gave it some thought last night and decided just to get one oscar. Their messy fish and im a begginer. It's probably best for me to start with just one Oscar. I think I'll get a albino today! I saw one at the store last night it was the last one i wanted it but somebody else said they wanted him first. Im gettin a pleco too. Im excited!

I think you'll be a lot happier with that decision. One oscar in a 55g is pretty much full.

Good call on only one fish...you will be much more satisfied...

Not all Pl*cos get huge...a lot of the "fancy" pl*cos do not get bigger that about 6-8 inches(this includes most of the bristlenoses)...and oscars do sometimes pick on pl*cos, especially their eyes...so see if you can find the species name or "L number" of the pleco you want, then go to planetcatfish.com and see what info you can find on that species...I would recomend one of the larger species...

Thanks for the advice seedy... I'll deffinitley try to find a larger pleco species. I Bought my Oscar! I didn't get a Albino I got a Tiger oscar. He/she is really preety! he/she's got a reddish backround with the stripes. This is a coincindence , but my other oscar that passed away had a 75 on him and this oscar also does too! Wow. I was watchin my new oscar and he/she was darting up to the bubbles and eating them or trying to lol.

-Any one have any good names they know of for my oscar ...besides "Oscar"

    Hes cute!

I was wondering about my oscar. I fed him 2 pellets this morning and he ate them. Does he need to be fed more than this each day? Or is it everyother day or something?
    Thanks.

Come on Jonah! One oscar in a tank, not over doing it,excited with it,and you have to say it ain't worth more than 75 cents?lolThey can be great pets, lots of personality.Good choice if you have or will give them the room they need. What size tank is it in?29gallon first 6 months then it's going to need a 55gal and would do best with a bigger one if you could come across a good deal on a used one. Then you could get an albino too.If in a smaller tank just don't feed it as much. Not the 3-5 minutes the food bottle says.Just a little pinch.Ever seen a full grown oscar in a 55 gallon tank? It's full!No not room for two!
