I bought this guy as an african goby but not sure the origin is correct and would love to know what the true species name is. Small fish and very slow growing.

You have a female Batanga lebretonis. It's from West Africa, and the males are beautiful. Unfortunately, it is very rare in the hobby. Max size is 12 cm, close to 5 inches.
In case you're thinking I'm a genius, I found it in my Baensch Atlas Photo Index. It's supposed to be in volumes 2 and 3.
Happiness may be the door to Heaven,
But Pleasure is not the Key.
It's very likely the genus has changed to Dormitator, the book was published in 97. That genus has representatives in Australia and North America, no reason relatives shouldn't be found in Africa as well. Nice looking fish, has more interesting patterns than most female Gobies.
