Well, quick update, they left the sponge filter alone with their new cave, and moved all the sand to that side of the tank. I went to San Francisco for a holiday, left them 4 days without food. Came home, fed them, and three days later there are baby convict cichlids. I had been hunting for eggs, but never saw them, so I don't know where they put them.

Anyway, good news!
