Monday is usually water change day for me, 30% on all tanks except the betta tank.

50% water change on every tank every week. Sometimes twice a week.

    25% weekly.

Note: The best way to determine your maintenance schedule is by using your Nitrate test kit! Once your fish are grown the tank will stabilize and your stocking level and feeding habits will determine water schedule and how much water you should be changing. All other cleaning is usually monthly or Bi-monthly.

Assuming your keep your nitrate level at 20ppm or less, then whenever it hits 30ppm you would do a 25% w/c OR when it hits 40ppm you would do a 50% w/c...

Interesting thread. I thought water changing weekly included vacuuming the gravel.

I do a 45 to 50% bi weekly which includes vacuuming and repairs. I can't imagine not vacuuming when changing water.

I'd like to know how long a person spends on each tank. Mine is a 120 gallon and it's a minimum 2 hours to clean just that one.

From everyone's replies, I'm noticing that I do significantly smaller water changes than most. As i said earlier, i do weekly 15% water changes and every month or two i siphon the gravel and change about 40% of the water. I have two 90 gallon Mbuna tanks, both set up for well over a year now, with about 20 adult fish. I run an Emperor 400 and Fluval 405 on each tank. All the fish are happy and healthy, they are constantly breeding and I can't remember the last time i had a death.

I test the water monthly and my nitrates are always under 20. Do you guys all find it necessary to do larger changes, like weekly 30 - 50% changes just to keep your nitrates down, or are there other benefits to doing so many large water changes?

    Just curious...

A very nice benefit of weekly large water changes is that fish grow quicker.

Ditto, except fry tanks. They get about 75% every 2-3 days.
