Thread: Lake Victorian Cichlids from Germany

Default Lake Victorian Cichlids from Germany

As some of you know, I was lucky enough to be included in a shipment of Lake Victorian cichlids imported from Germany. This was made possible by a few dedicated hobbyists in California.

    Labrochromis ishmaeli

I have six in a 40 gallon long single species tank. Not much color at all as you can see. I guess I just have to be patient. No breeding yet even though the largest one is 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) total length. I’m guessing 3M:3F based solely upon the size and one barely visible egg spot so that’s close but wrong.

    Neochromis rufocauldalis

These were accidentally included in the shipment of Mbipia lutea. I have one male and one female in a 46 gallon bowfront tank with the Mbipia lutea. They are both around 1.5 inches (3.5 cm) total length although the female is slightly larger than the male. No breeding yet but the male has started getting feisty chasing the female much more than usual. I had these before and they are one of my favorites.

    Mbipia lutea

I have one male and three females in a 46 gallon bowfront tank with the rufocauldalis. The male is around 2 inches (5 cm) long and the three females are all around 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) total length. The first time they bred I captured some pictures of the breeding. The mom spit around 15 but two weeks ago I found all the fry had died. But … another female is holding and should spit in a few days.

    Astatoreochromis alluaudi

I have five adults in a single species 55 gallon tank. The dominant male (pictured above) is around 4.5 inches (11 cm) long. I believe there are one much smaller sub-dominant male and three females. They’ve bred three times so far. The first brood of 12 went to one of the guys responsible for the importation. The second brood of 12 I have in a 30 gallon grow out tank and they are a full inch (2.5 cm) long. They grow very fast. The third batch of 14 are in a ten gallon grow out tank. I want to have a large established colony before I start distributing them.

    Haplochromis sp. "Blue Obliquidens"

One of the California importers sent me these guys.

Deadman on the local fish forums was telling about this shipment as well. I just started keeping my first Vics, and am glad we now have some of these harder to find varieties in the US.

Put me down for some of the rufocaudalis if you ever end up with any fry to sell!

Do you happen to still have the hookup in California as that is where I live and looking for some Vic's.
