Default Question about pregnant OB Peacock

I have a 55 w/ a bunch of Aficans, two that are peacocks. One is now holding and in a ten gallon tank. My questions are:

I have a whisper 20-40 hang on filter. with a black foam pre-filter wraped aroung the pick up tube.. Will this work??
Or will it suck my fry up??

Shes been holding for about ten days. How much longer?

Shes about 3.5 inches long. How many will my OB spit out?

Lights have been off most of the time also

The tank is bare w/ only a couple of clay pots for her sake. And i do know some of the questions here have certain factors omitted, but i just want some guestemates from this knowledgable forum.

I really don't know what i'm doing, when it comes to this.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat & drink beer all day.

She'll probably hold for about 3-4 weeks total; minus ten days that's 11-18 days left to go. Just keep an eye on her condition. If she feels safe in her maternity tank, she shouldn't have any problems releasing the fry at the right time.

I would say look for 1-4 babies first time around.

Just remeber algae needs lights to grow and thats a good source of food for the babies. also When they are born some believe they instinctively seek "shadows"... such as caves and so forth.

Sounds fine . You can either let her "spit" the babies on her own or you can "strip" them. I would suggest this first time to let her hold them on her own and see if she rears them well. If she does not then next time consider stripping them and adding a tank divider.

I really don't know what i'm doing, when it comes to this.

My OB Peacock spit 33 babies only 2 1/2 weeks after she got her mouthful and it was her first time, but all fish are not the same. She was a lousy mother too. Had no interest in them once she spit them. I took her out a day later and put her in a transition tank.
As for the fry getting sucked into the filter, a really small pore sponge is usually good, but I find lessens the effectiveness of some filters. Better to put an old nylon tied around the intake. Then you can take it off and throw it away.
Just one more fish...I sware it's the last one!

Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.

she had 12 to 15 fry. I put in a couple dozen pieces of marble sized rock and then put slate over the rock . And now the adult is back in the big tank. FYI
