    Default breeding Severum (gold)

    Hey guys...

Iím kind of "old-new" in the fish biz. (2.5 years), and for the past 7 months Iíve been raising Severums (2 - alone). And about a week ago, I saw in the tank many orange "dots". I didn't do anything about it (expect showing them to everyone :-)). A day after I looked into the tank and the eggs were gone, (not hidden - the tank isn't that big, and I looked everywhere. And to confirm my suspicion I moved a big rock and there were a few eggs there and the male ate them instantly). So now what shell I do? (I cleaned the tank so there are no eggs for sure).

How long would it take for her to lay eggs again?
Next time should I separate the eggs from their parents? (I have 2 tanks) or maybe just the male?
How long does it take for the eggs to hatch?
How can I know that the female is pregnant?

Any other tips would really help me to know my fish better....

    Thanks for your time!

It may just be that the parents need more time to hone their parenting skills. Sometimes the new parents get nervous and eat all of the eggs, but as they have more broods the parents should stop eating the eggs and raisinf the young. also you could try to add more cover to the tank like maybe some more plants so they feel more secure in the tank. In the event that they always eat the eggs you will probably have to seperate the parents from the eggs and raise the eggs yourself. But usually the parents will take care of it.

It really depends on the female, but it shouldnt be that long.

yeah once they start ... it takes more to make them stop than anything. Most of my fish don't hold to term successfully on the their first go, and I had a pair of sevs (green tho, not gold) lay eggs a couple of times and they ate them all 4 times.

I blamed tankmates on their reasons for eating them. Too many aggressive fish stressing them I think. If you have yours alone ... I would think a few unsuccessful tries is normal ... and once they get the hang of it, you'll have no problems breeding the sevs
Is Hokey Pokey really what its all about?

thanks.... really happy to hear that....

don't you recommend separating the sevs from the eggs?
    wouldn't it be safer?

It is better for the eggs to be with the parents as they will give them 24/7 care which will help to allow as many to hatch as possible. if you were to seperate them you would have to make sure they always had water circulating around them and make sure that any that become fungused are removed. So if the eggs are left with the parents they will do this. Also, when the eggs hatch the parents take much better care of the fry than any human could, and the fry tend to grow quicker when they are kept with the parents.
