Thread: Filtration type

    Default Filtration type

If, [i:cc10a729c6]hypothetically[/i:cc10a729c6] mind you, I were interested in setting up a 125g tank, how should I go about filtering it? My options seem to be 2 over-the-back ACs or a canister filter, or perhaps something more along the DIY fluidized bed filter sorta thing. Any recommendations?

    I've got 2 AC500's and a Fluval404 on my 125g. The AC's have 2 sponges in each. My other 125g has 2 emperor400's and a penguin300, but it's in the garage so I don't care about the noise.

Ideally, you'd have an efficient wet/dry or biowheel filtration as a start. Couple that with a strong mechanical filtration system and you're there!

As far as specific recommendations go, I'd suggest at least two Emperor 400's. Perhaps add another Emperor (I think you'd still have room for a 280), and that would take care of your mechanical (and chemical if you filled the media trays). Then, if the tank was drilled (a strong suggestion), I'd attach a wet dry under the tank. An alternative to that would be various sponge filters (maybe two or three Hydro Sponge IV's or V's). Perhaps you could also fashion a powerhead arrangement to keep a good flow throughout the tank.

All in all, the overflow and power filter combination is the most effective (if not cheapest) combination).
