What is this brown stuff all over my aquarium?

Q: I have a rust colored algae (or some growth) in my tank. Seems to be spreading from the rocks and fake plant to other places. After a couple of 50% water changes and physical scrubbing it is still there. Any help would be appreciated.

A: Diatoms, or "Brown Algae" are very common in new tanks.  As long as the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels of the tank are acceptable, then there is no need for water changes. Diatoms begin growing before green algae, as soon as green algae starts growing then the brown algae will die off as it doesn't compete well with the green forms of algae.

* Rubber-lipped and Bristle-nose plecos eat diatoms with relish!
