Q: Are there really any benefits to using a UV sterilizer in a freshwater setup? Someone is trying to
convince me they are worthwhile - but I'm not buying it...
A:
Reducing free floating algae (green water) is about the only reason to use a UV
Sterilizer. Ultra Violet (UV) light kills much more than just plants like algae, it also will kill bacteria, mold, and fungus which turns your tank into a near
sterile environment. Your fishes immune systems are worthless when left
untested, so long term use is not recommended. UV Use for short periods to clear up “green water” are
acceptable, but constant use in unwarranted. It would be better for
you to investigate the underlying problems causing the algal blooms than rely on these products as a crutch.
