Ok got back from my moms again and I am short another saulosi >.< Now I am really pissed off. I am more then positive my male saulosi got this one, little @$$...

Well good news is I found a really nice home for my 2zebras, acai, and other. I saw this little boy at the lfs today looking at the cichlids and fell in love with them and begging his mom for some. I pulled them off to the side and told them I had four they could have.

The mother has been raising bettas lol and had tetras, but found them boring and was interested into switching. They were looking at the bumblebees and kenyis and I told them those are a no go. I showed them pics of mine and the boy fell in love.

As of now they have a 26BF, and she is in the process of searching craigslist for a bigger one now lol. I told them a 40somethingBF should be ok with the four. She said she is fine with having only a few as long as they are fun to watch. So far mine have found their pecking order and show little to no aggression (my male zebra being top dog) I am sure my other zebra, the acai are female, the other one might be male but he is very mellow and just keeps to himself.

I am excited for them and told them if the fish get too big or too much trouble I will take them back. But they should be gone within the week, which will give me room to get more saulosi (mainly see if they have a dominant male) to kick my male back into the pecking order little turd is such a PITA!

Ok so Ive been going over and over the internet gathering info and slowly getting my tank ready. Its not the ideal tankfor later on but the LFS has cichlids that are about an inch long. Its a 20gal tall African cichlid sand lots of rock work no heater as of yet (still need to go get it) for a filter I went probably a little over board and got the marineland emperor 400 as I heard you can over stock africans if the filtration is adequate. So what I've been trying to do is come up with a list or a few lists of possibilities of what might work together..I just got a 40gallon long tank for them when they grow up a bit. Any ideas looking for a variety of color.

I have a pair (male & female) of brichardi's and I was keeping them in a 10 gallon tank because that is all I had at the time away from my other cicklids. They spawned several times but seemed to always eat the young. I just bought a larger tank set up and I believe its either a 30 or 35 gallon tank. They are doing great in the larger tank but what I'm wondering is, will they stop eating the young now that they are in a larger tank? what all can I feed them to keep them at 100%? I just always seem to think that there is something I could be doing to make it better for the fish.

Thanks so much for all the info in advance I really appreciate it! :)

I saw acouple of yellow tailed acei's at petsmart and was pizzed off at what I saw. They had them in a tank with jewels. They must have jumped their tank and into the next. They didn't even bother to put them back into ther own tank. I snatched them up and brought them home thinking maybe I could save them. I found out on my way home one had popeye prolly from the stress. They look very ruff and some are not eating. I noticed yesturday that they have alittle ick which ment I had to treat my tank. I have a 55 gallon of four kenyi, four trewavasae and the three acei's. The one with popeye is in my hospital tank. What I want to know is will they have a chance? I put salt and some ick cure in my tank and turned the heat up on both tanks. Also I know kenyi's can be mean but I added 77 ponds of rock to my 56 when I added the sick fish. Also is it commen for kenyi to round up new fish? My female lost her eggs an she is acting like they are her babies. She won't let no one near em. Oh and the ick didn't show up till after I brought them home.

As my tank clears up thanks to the advice of some of the members here, I've continued to read the forum and try to get learned up some. Seems I didn't know as much as I thought I did.

I've tried, to the detrement of my free time, to read and read as much as I can find about African cichlids and I'm far more confused (albeit it slightly more knowledgeable) than when I started.

I have, what I believe to be, the following fish in a 40 gallon aquarium:

Bumblebee Cichlid - Pseudotropheus crabro

A cichlid labeled as a peacock cichlid. Mostly white colored with some splotches. Closest picture I could find was referred to as an "Orange Blossom Peacock".

Pseudotropheus estherae - Red Zebra Cichlid

Melanochromis auratus - Auratus Cichlid

Pseudotropheus sp. - Acei

Jewel cichlid

All of the cichlids are between 3/4" to 1" long currently.

Also, we have a large (10" approximately), pleco in the tank.

After doing all of this reading, I'm a tad worried about the mix in the tank. The bumblebee is supposed to get 8" long, which is in contrast to what the sticker said.

So, should I sell/trade/return any of them? Should I get different one's? More of one, less of another? I thought I knew what I was doing "Get African cichlids, all African cichlids, and you'll be fine", but it seems that wasn't sound advice.

Any help would be appreciated.

so i've been experimenting in the past with growing my own spirulina algae. i had some left over pure 100% spirulina powder and decided to mix up 2 teaspoons of it and dump it into my 125 gallon tank with fish in it. after dumping it, im not beginning to think it was a bad idea.....

the water is green, but can still see fairly well into the tank. is the spirulina going to harm them in anyway??? is there such thing as a spirulina overdose?

should i just be safe and do a water change to get quite a bit of it out?

any help appreciated!!!

I have been keeping africans (mostly haps and peacocks) for about 2.5 y now. Prior to that, I did brackish for a while, and before that (in college... surprise huh) i did piranhas. I have upgraded my tanks over the years to now a 125g with a 30g sump.

The problem with me and my tanks is that i am ADD :jump::rock::dance:, and i am constantly wanting to try new things and learn a new part of the fish hobby.

Don't get me wrong, i love the fish that i have ended up with over the past 2 years... i have a couple of really nice peacocks, (A. Jakes), and now have a nicely colored up blue ahli, and some a couple of nice rusties.

What should my next turn be? A species tank? I had thought about hi-tech planted tank, or el-natural planted tank with some colorful tetras... My wife likes some of the salt fishes, but i don't know if i want to go that route quite yet (maybe after i move and can get an RO system).

Anyhow, i want to know what you guys/gals do when you are kind of stuck in a rut and just getting a new fish or 2 won't quite do it

In my 55gal tank I have 2 yellow labs, 4 johanni, 2 red zebras, and 4 Kenyi. The male Johanni has always been a bit on the aggressive side but this last month he's turned into a right bastard and claimed the right 3 quarters of the tank all for himself, any fish that croses the invisable line is chased in circles and then into the corner. today I noticed that he now has claimed the entire bottem of the tank and herded all the fish into the top left quarter of the tank. Normally I would just remove the fish but he is the crown jewel of my tank, none of the other fish are even close to how colorful he is.

Also worth noting is that my male yellow lab is the true king of the tank and does what he wants but he's chill and doesn't bother the other fish.

Below is what the tank looks like all day long from sun up to sun down except when I approach the tank or they get fed. the The Johanni can be see to the right of the other fish waiting for someone to cross his line (the line is about where the bamboo in front of the rocks is). the yellow lab is the big yellow one that is floating closest to the Johanni.

Is there anything I can do about this besides removing him? My plan at the moment is to try adding more rocks and hiding places.

Okay I finally found a place to trade my Mbweca...
They were supposed to be Lion's Cove(cynotilapia)
I have
6 P. Saulosi. Most likely one-two males, but not positive of the rest
3 Cyno White Top Hara(1 male, 2 females I belive)
Althought there isn't much in the way of the male trying to spawn with the females
2 Melanochromis Cyaneorhabos(1 juvie male and 1 juvie female-although again male just chases female)
1 Metriclima Mbweca(bad boy, but so pretty-just dosent play well with his mates)

What to get,
Assuming they do an even trade, i could get two on credit
if not maybe one.

I would assume to at least shoot for 2 female Saulosi...

Could I or should I add some of the others to balance anything out

I know I could add a few more but not alot

Ok.. I have bought most of my lill cichlids at the local petsmart..( and my giant Nimbochromis venustus at the private store...( and thanks for the identity of him) but as you all know.. the labeling on the "cichlid tank is
( "African Cichlids") as general a statement as they can make it. My question is this.

I dont have the eye to distinguish between the different types of Cichlids.. and have learned ( from here of course!!!!:)) that some cichlids are milder mannered than other ones.

So where does the "untrained fish lover like me, buy fish that I can walk out of the store ( or purchase online) with the knowledge that they arent gonna be partially incompatible?
