Does anyone know of an Mbuna that would keep my Maylandia greshakei in check? He seems to be getting a little more aggressive in hte last couple of weeks.

I have a Maylandia Lombardoi that was like that, I had to seperate him. The tricky part is finding one that will keep him in check and yet not harass the rest of the tank. Otherwise you're where you started :x

what else have you got in the tank, and what size tank is it? you may just need to rearrange the decor to shake up the hierarchy--but it could backfire, too...inexact science this mbuna-keeping. :P

He shares a 125 with 1m&3f Maylandia greshakei, Ps. flavus (1m&1f) , Ps. msobo "magunga" (5m&11f), Ps. johanni or Melanochromis johanni depending on your source (1m) and what I think are Maylandia zebra OR estherae "ob morph" (2m&3f). I just rearranged the tank 5 days ago which I think is the reason why my Ps flavus is spawning. :) I have never had a chance to watch. I mean he is doing "the dance" as I type. :D AWESOME! :D I've never seen it happen, just the end result. I love this hobby!! :D

I am unsure of what the OB Morphs are. The store listed them as "cichlids from Africa". I kind of figured they were Mbuna cause they (the 5 I have)were surviving a life in the tank with a truckload of M auratus. I'm leaning toward M estherae due to shape and length, but every pic I've seen of the OB morph shows both male and female with a LOT more black than any of mine have.

I have heard that spawning will make other species crazy. Perhaps they are sexually frustrated...lol

Pharmones?

I have actually seen this happen in the wild too (with north american species bass ect.)

Does this aggression have any coorlation?

 Never thought about it that way?! Could be. I guess if I had to see them "doing the dance" and I had no dance partner that was interested I would get kind of upset too. :(
I will have to keep an eye on him now to see how things go for a while.

A spell check would be great...I am so lazy.

Actually I have some clients that I set up web based mail for and that is the biggest complaint...lol

Well what I have seen is other fish circling around nests of the spawning fish. They will group up to harrass them and perhaps raid the nest. Not sure if it the eggs they want or if it causes a frenzy.

Reminds me of fishing for trout in Wyoming during the spawn...they group up and go in a feeding frenzy.
