How can you without a doubt tell the difference between a White Saum and a true green terror Aequidens rivulatus? I think I have come accross a female but want to be sure. I probably don't have long so Rex if you are out there please help me out. Everything I know it looks like one, but having said that I have never seen one in person.

Here is a picture of Aequidens sp. "GoldSaum"

http://www.petsforum.com/cichlidroom/tanks/t020.html

The "real" Aequdens sp. "Gold Saum" has variants with yellow, orange, red and white edges. But don't confused he white edge "Gold Saum" with the fish below.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is Aquidens sp. "WhiteSaum" (I love these and wish I could find some)

http://www.geocities.com/bluespeacock/wsaum.jpg

Notice the characteristic Twisted dorsal fin of adults. These guys are found in West Peru

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And finally here is the TRUE Aquidens Rivulatus
as stated by Sven Kullander

This one is young

If you ask me, I say buy the fish and ask questions later :)

The guy is home at 1:15. I will be there. I am just going to throw her in with my Bleekeri and moori till I can find something else.

Worth a shot and I am leaning towards a true green terror.

Thanks Rex

Thanks Rex for the link to Bluespeacock's site. He has some FANTASTIC specimens. His G. gymnogenys is eyepopping, and my lap filled with drool when I saw his Zebra obliquidens:

Gotta get some of those.

Well I got her. She is either a really good at disguise or a true green terror. Regardless I would say she is a find. Not a speck of yellow, or anything else on her. Looks noticably different from the others. Fricken expensive, but worth it.

Good going Rex, now you made me want a whitesaum !
Then again she could be one. It is only 2.5 inches.

Thats hooked dorsal is really cool

Thats definantly cool. How much was she? Just curious as to how much one would cost, as I have never seen them offered by anyone and hey are obviously very rare. Did the guy say that it was the true Rivulatus or is it your observation that it is? If you ever find any "WhiteSaum"'s for sale let me know, like wise Ill let you know if I find any. I always have trouble when I wrtite "saum". I try to write it as Seam which is what it is. Get it White seam as in white line.

CJ, yeah I like that site to. I had it book marked because he had pictures of the Striped Midas in Philly's China Town that I was thinking about buying.

Rex this is what he told me. I asked because it does look a lot different. It is not an aqurium green terror like you see in the stores. It is spawn from wild caught terrors. He did keep calling it a white tip. I didn't ask to many questions as I finagelled him to sell it to me. I paid $35 for 2.5 inch so not cheap. I could have got ripped off but as I say i has no yellow, orange or gold. No even the remote trace of it. I will go take pics. Then go to the library

Thanks again Rex

Thats what Ive heard about the true GT's. Cant wait to see that pic! Watch out for ur bleekeri and other fish tho; true GTs are supposed to be worse than RDs and Midas's in terms of aggression.

Hey Cypherman,

My GT has some growing to do before she is aggressive.

I thought I would update this. The only reason that White saum and True GT are extremely hard to find is that they do not sell well. They have to ship them in special order and it is even hard to find someone to get them in the first place. Basically nobody will buy them as they are not colorful.
Go figure!

Now I really want a white saum. Rex I am on it I will let you know if I find anything

Hey, I just noticed that on the last price list I got from Jeff Rapps, he has A. Rivulatus available. It says they are wild caught green terrors. You may want to give him a call.

I just checked chet and they are not on the list on the site. Do you have a copy.

The list on the site hasn't been updated since April. Just email Jeff about it. The price list I have that included the GTs was sent to me on Aug. 14. Hope this helps. If nothing else, he could be a source of identification info or future breeding pairs.

Where did you dig this up Jenni??

No I have had two now that are not "true".
Funny how it works though. Now that they are available through Rapps I wouldn't mind having a big old nice White Saum instead.

I found a 5" male white saum here in Atlanta for $29. I am tempted to buy him, but don't know where I would keep him.

I have a 125 with 2 10" oscars that would probably try to make a meal out of him.

Can 2 male GT's live together? I have a gorgeous 4" male gold saum with a 3" (sex unknown) gold saum in a 55 gl tank right now.
