I have read tha Cichlids prefer long tanks. My particualr space is more suited to a Pent or hex tank. I am currently looking at 44 pent, and 60 hex.
My question: if a hex tank (tall, 24X24X30H) was built with rock caves to the top, would it be suitable for small Malawi cichlids?

I would consider Tanganyikans....The dwarf species. Julies and a few others would work perhaps They all do need more horizontal space than verticle.
I wouldn't try over crowding this tank...A few more visable inhabitants would work.
Look at the estimated expectancy for adult size and how they breed (i.e. do they require substrate... before you make a purchase.
The colors on Tangs are brilliant. I would suggest Jul. marlier

i think that you can make it work, so long as you pile the rocks up high. it would probably be better if you could do one of those very lightweight diy cave projects.
