I am in process of setting up a 29g tank, and tested my tap water today. Out of the tap it has a PH of 7.3, and a hardness of <15ppm, which I know are both low. I also tested the water in my tank which has been sitting with substrate (regular pea gravel found and most hardware stores), and the heater and filter running for a few weeks. The water in the tank tested at a PH of 8.4 but the hardness still <15ppm. This leads me to think that the gravel is raising the PH, though I'm not certain at this point, (any opinions would be appreciated :D ), also what would you suggest to raise the hardness? Thanks!

What kind of gravel are you using...Rock or sand shouldn't change things much. If you have limestone (or other calcareous) rocks then it would.

The gravel I am using is 'pea gravel' avaiable at most hardware stores for around $3 for 25lb, so I'm not sure of the makeup exactly.
