Besides the light fixtures I bought, my 125 gal. came with a 72" single bulb fluorescent fixture. It only holds a 48" bulb. I am considering a power compact retrofit, but don't want to spend a fortune. Any suggestions/brands/types, etc?
Thanks, Sam

sam, you really don't need that kind of lighting for an mbuna tank. are you planning to try to grow plants?

Thanks Gypsy.
I'm surprised at how much light the double 36" fixtures put out. Especially since they have the cheapo bulbs that they usually send them with. They have the chrome/polished reflectors and that seems to make a big difference. Maybe I'll just add a reflector to the single lamp fixture and put some sort of actinic blue bulb in it to give the tank that blue/white look. That will be a lot cheaper and plenty of light. I will probably put Power-Glo bulbs in the double 36"'s. That's what I have in my other aquariums and I like the color I get from them.

Sam,
Keep in mind Malawi and Tangs are used to a low light environment. Its not like salt water where the requirements are different (Hi sodium and halide)
So how is the rest of the 125 going? I am thinking about getting one, but am thinking about moving and don't want to have to move 3 tanks and 310 gallons worth of fish and rock.

WRONG!! you should move now, cuz the longer you wait, the more tanks you'll have--buy that house!

j-my 125 is up and running! Just waiting for it to cycle. I am using the fishless/ammonia method, we'll see how it works.
I wrote the question about the lighting before I turned on the new fixtures I bought. I have never had the ones with polished reflectors before, and they are definitely brighter! More than adequate for my tank.
Gypsy-does that statement fall under the category of advising people to sell their furniture to make more space for tanks? Do I see a new Emoticon on it's way?
Thanks, Sam

HARRRUMMPH!!! that was perfectly sound financial advice, sam! in no way was i encouraging j to set up more tanks...i was simply advising him to bow to the inevitable. haven't you noticed the rate at which j aquires new fish and new aquarium gadgets--he's worse than me!
