View Full Version : kenyi is holding!! now what?
I've read what I could about this in the different forums and various other sites, but I just want to be sure I get it right. I leave her in the tank (55gal) for 14-21 days, then more her to a different tank (I started up an old 10gal today). After she releases the fry I should put her into another tank by herself for a couple of weeks then back into the 55? The 10gal has no gravel and an Aqua Clear Mini. I took some floss and Biomax out of my Fluval (on the 55gal) to jump start it. I covered the intake of the AC with a filter bag to keep the future fry out. I will also get a sponge filter this week. How am I doing so far??

I would put a little pile of rocks in the corner of the 10g. It'll make her feel more secure and it'll give the fry a place to hide from mom (she'll try to pick them up again). Then I'd just leave her in the same 10g for 2-3 days to fatten up before going back in the main tank. Everything else you mentioned is about the way I'd do it myself.
Unless you're feeding the filter while the 10g is empty, you might want to wait until just before you move her to seed the mini filter.
Is it bad to put sand/gravel in the tank I'm planing on keeping the fry in this tank until they get big?
My 10g is fully graveled with two rock formations. I just have a old whisper 1 filter in there. The rocks will provide a place for the holding female to hide and feel secure, as well as a place for the fry to hide up next to or under once released. Has worked well for 8 Kenyi fry, like 25+ yellow labs, and now there is 15+ little Red zebras in there. If the tank is still cycling, just keep a close eye on the levels since fry are more sensitive.
