nice. the afra pic should go into the photo contest. that is a hellofa fish! but then again, matt is not at all a sucker for pretty mbuna. nope. not him. never.
the fact that suddenly the third person has come out indicates the kind of day i had. and pretty fish helped!!!
but who gets to enter it? fish owner or photographer?
just looked at the pic of the afra again before hitting submit.
such a cool fish!

Thanks Matt....well....since Photorah took the pics, I'm going to let her enter them....
Yeah, i love those afras....I've been waiting to get a nice pic of the Mbweca male for a while now!
Nice pics, your Afra looks like hes gonna be a nice one. Is he pretty mean? I think they are pretty similar to my Kingsizei, and they mean little devils heh.
The LFS has some of those Mbwecas, I don't see the "green" in them though.
A friend has a similar afra from Ussiyia, orangeish color with a blue mid section.

Woot, thanks...I don't find my afras to be any meaner than any other of my Mbuna...They certainly hold thier own though...
The green is more a "sheen" in them though....It's hard to capture on film, and juveniles lack it...You can see a hint of it in the very top of the dorsal fin in the pic above...
I'm still waiting for that white top to get some size and "fill out"...He's been a rather slow grower....
My Kingsizei grow extremely slower then alot of my other mbuna. I have a male that I have grown from a 1/2" fry for about a year now and hes only 2.5-3". I guess this might be why they classify them as a dwarf, although my adult male isn't so dwarf.
I saw one of the male Mbweca colored up abit one time at that LFS, but they were only around 2.5". Too many nice Afra out there I tell ya. I had to cut myself off of getting anymore. I already have a species tank of Jalo Reefs, and have a quad of Cobue in with my Lab tank. I also have Sand Senga, not sure if they are an Afra but are Cynotilapia. Then the Kingsizei is probably a suped up name for a Afra white top from Likoma Island. Afra madness. :sygypsy:

Nice lookin fish and picks CD and Photorah. I like Cynotilapia's also. I bought a pair of jalo's.About a month ago.Kinda like the white top only with an orange dorsal. The male is about 3" and the female 2". She was holding after about a week. Have em in the 125g with 6"- 8" adult haps.
I thought at first the haps might try to eat the female, she was kinda small, but they hardly even looked at her.
CD, have you seen the pic of the "mbweca" Cobwe in Konings? Things almost black with the gold color shining through. Do yours get that dark?

Wel i have never seen the C.afra Mbweca get quite that dark but his stripes sure do come in when he is mad or angry or fighting or mating
Other than that it may be possible you are thinking of a differnt fish as the term MBWECA referd to the reef in lake malawi that this fish came from and there are Three different types that come from there that is why sceintific names are so important this one is C. afra "Mbweca"
But there are also Labidochromis chisumulae "Mbweca" and
Metriaclima aurora "Mbweca"
And I belive there may be one more with the title of Mbweca but i am not positive.

That would be Cynotilapia "mbweca" Cobwe page #167.
I'm not doubting that CD's fish is what he say's it is.Only asking if his get that dark in coloration.

Actually Konings calls it a Cynotilapia sp."mbweca" Cobwe. All the afra's are blue with black bars with various shades of yellow on the head and dorsal or in the case of the jalo....orange.

Hey Z...I've seen a few different pictures of C.sp "Mbweca", and I do have to say that I think there may be some confusion...One of the pictures I've seen of a fish in a hand of a collecter on the lake is darker with a more redish color....Other pictures I have seen from collectors in France look just like mine...I suspect that it will get only a little bit darker and primarily just in the stripes....of course like most Mbuna it's color varies widely by mood...
