hi guys,

My Jaguar and black belt are just about the shyest fish i've ever seen, they get along ok now but whereas the jaguar will come out the black belt is very timid, when he does come out to feed (which isnt very often, but he does eat) he doesnt get chased of anything he just grabs and darts back into his cave (which he has dug out with great skill and effort).

He's coloured up, fins held erect, no flukes or parasites (that i can see), he's just very, very shy.

I even had to remove 3 small lemon fin barbs cos they freaked him out.

they are in a 60g, they are both about 4" at the mo so plenty of space, waters fine, plenty of driftwood caves, flowerpot caves, a few plastic plants, all in all a supposed CA cichlid heaven

has anyone else had this problem, i dont want to force him into the open, i would much rather he came out of his ow accord, i dont like bare tanks, but is that my problem have i given him too many places to hide?

he's a fantastic looking fish, i'd just like to see a little more of him.

P.s do you think the jaguar is to blame, i have noticed a little bit of a teritorial squabble, but nothing major.

the black belt was locally bred, and prior to being sold lived in a fish house, with little human contact, could another black belt in the tank help??

i realise i'm going on but i really want to get this right, i hate it when my fish arnt happy.

please help

Neil

Personally I think another black belt will just increase disputes. You are probably right on the money if the fish was farm bred he is not used to people. Give him time. Black belts are usually pretty social. Jags however can be stick in the muds.

You may want to add some giant danios as dithers. They are a bit less stressful than barbs.
