this is a great fish--both the males and the females are striking, and they contrast nicely with malawians. i've kept them successfully with mbuna and malawi haps. check out this article:

i have read that you need two or three males in your colony in order to get these fish to breed. apparently the male competition triggers spawning. i was also told that females which are kept without males for an extended period will have sterile eggs for their first spawn.

Not in my tank. I have one male and two females and the one male has spawned once with one female and twice with the other.

hmmm...maybe my tank is just too crowded...but someone else told me that they weren't getting any spawning activity with just one male, either--well, i'm going to try to track down a couple more males to see if anything changes.
