Since this has been a stumbling block "so many times", there obviously needs to be a change made.

I propose that on the login popup (it comes up right after you click the login link), it should have a small message something like this:

"First time users: please send a PM to Tom to request a username and password."

Part of the reason for the "misses" is that many--most--folks don't read the Announcement section. Note the Welcome and Registration announcement, for example: It's been up since 31 August 2002, has but 75 views as of this posting while the number of members is well over 300.

As to your idea: Sounds good--really. I can't do PHP scripting, but I'll have the programmer look into it.

I just assumed that announcements pertaining to the gallery would be posted in the gallery forum. There is an annoucements/rules thread at the top of this forum, but it doesn't contain any info about obtaining a username/password. I thought that forum-specific announcements would be in the "annoucement" thread in that specific forum. I checked, and it didn't say anything about how to sign up. So, I asked. Perhaps the information could be added in each gallery forum as a sticky, just to be safe. I've spent the past 2.5 years as a webmaster, and it never ceases to amaze me how people seem to miss the most obvious stuff. The best bet is to just plaster any important information all over the place (at least that always worked best for me).
