Hi all, I'm looking to build my own sump filtration for a shelving unit I've got with 3 tanks. Running 3 heaters & 3 filters is costing me a bundle in power (along with the other 2 aquariums & heated pond) so I thought I could save some dosh & use a sump filter as all 3 tanks are Tang's so water conditions are the same.

Anyway, is there anyway to create the sump flow from the tanks to the sump without drilling?
I thought of siphoning as the drain but if there's a power failure they'll run the water level down below the siphon & stop. Then the pump will start again when the power comes back on & run the sump empty & burn out.

The tanks are already established so pulling them apart to drill would be major pain.

So when all else fails as the guru's. So guru's??? :e:

Not a DIy Guru...but what about an overflow box system? That way when the power goes out, the most you can have siphon is to the bottom of the intake...

As long as you leave enough "room" in your sump, it should be able to "take" the water that siphons w/o flooding.....

I would definitely drill, but overflow boxes are used by many too. I find the most overlooked issue is in sump size. Make sure you get a nice big one (I try for 1/3rd of the total system).
