hi guys,

My Jaguar and black belt are just about the shyest fish i've ever seen, they get along ok now but whereas the jaguar will come out the black belt is very timid, when he does come out to feed (which isnt very often, but he does eat) he doesnt get chased of anything he just grabs and darts back into his cave (which he has dug out with great skill and effort).

He's coloured up, fins held erect, no flukes or parasites (that i can see), he's just very, very shy.

I even had to remove 3 small lemon fin barbs cos they freaked him out.

they are in a 60g, they are both about 4" at the mo so plenty of space, waters fine, plenty of driftwood caves, flowerpot caves, a few plastic plants, all in all a supposed CA cichlid heaven

has anyone else had this problem, i dont want to force him into the open, i would much rather he came out of his ow accord, i dont like bare tanks, but is that my problem have i given him too many places to hide?

he's a fantastic looking fish, i'd just like to see a little more of him.

P.s do you think the jaguar is to blame, i have noticed a little bit of a teritorial squabble, but nothing major.

the black belt was locally bred, and prior to being sold lived in a fish house, with little human contact, could another black belt in the tank help??

i realise i'm going on but i really want to get this right, i hate it when my fish arnt happy. :(

please help

Neil

do you think some less frantic dither fish could help, to be fair the barbs were a bit manic,

What lighting are you using, so cichlids dont like bright lights. I think some more fish will help. I would suggest a pleco that is of fair size. Some clown loaches would be nice too and yes maybe some barbs. Make sure you get some larger sized buddies. I had a jag and a black belt together and they did not get along. Which ever one was larger picked on the other one. I sold the black belt, he was very nice looking but not as social as the jag. I tried to get clown loaches not too long ago but they were too small and my 9" jag ate them with alittle help from the 12" oscar. Man was that a pricey lunch. good luck.
