Hi Guys!:) I would like to start this Post purely for the discussion of mixing. The discussion must be to openly debate the combinations one can use for setting up a Malawi Cichlid community aquarium. It would be wonderful to hear out of peoples experience of species that works together and to share that knowledge and traits.
I would like to start with the group of species which is common to mix well which is Yellow Labs and Rusties.but the question is can one ad Acei white tail Ngara and for example a Jacobfreibergie Peacock.
Work will it?Feel free to debate and give extra combinations that would work in your experience for example a trio of Baenschi and Jacobfreibergi Peacocks in a 120G...............:)

I had Lemon Jake peacocks with rusties, yellow labs and Ps. cyaneorhabdos. The combination worked for a while but eventually the peacocks seemed not to thrive as well. This was in a 75 gallon tank.
If I'd had acei rather than cyaneorhados, it might have worked out better, but I never tried that combination.

Would Aceis, rusties, labs and C.Afra's works.:)Is C.Afra's a aggressive species because males is but aggression levels to a degree of 1-5 where would you rate them.Is it two.Why-spyder would have a answer I believe.

Cynotilapia zebroides (formerly C. afra) vary in territoriality but most would do fine with Ps. acei, I. sprengerae, and a Labidochromis species so long as it isn't similar in coloration (like Lab. mbamba).

Ok..........:) so now I see.
That would be a nice setup. Imagine the colour combination,

C. afra "cobue" (oops C. zebroides) is the only one I've had personal experience with and I think it would be fine with those three species. I currently house a breeding group with Lab. chisumulae. The cobue are aggressive enough to keep themselves safe from other fish (I had a fish killing others in the tank and the cobues and labs both survived with no losses).

Very strange. The Afra's and Lab. Chisumulae males have the same colour mating dress. They did not fight?:)

Why-Spyder.Is Cynotilapia Afra compatible with a Aulonocara Jacobfreibergi. Will a C.Afra be placid enough?:)

No they don't fight. The male cobue has a yellow head and dark lower fins. The chisumulae male ranges from white with dark stripes to a blue color with black stripes, a much darker color than the background color on the cobue male. I have 2 chisumulae males and the cobue male and both groups are breeding and little to no damage on either group.

SabrinaD ;) That combination should be interesting. The females of both species do they fight for dominance?

Aulonocara should be okay with Cynotilapia - more times than not they don't really notice the other species. I kept very docile Lethrinops with my C. zebroides Lupingu and C. sp. "Hara" - and the Lethrinops still managed to setup shop and spawn (in a 55g).

Nope, no problem with the females. The females are very different in color, shape and size and tend to ignore one another. The chisumulae females range from pure white to showing some stripes (faded in color, not as dark as the males); they are also smaller than the cobues. The cobue females are brownish. And the males only pay attention to their females.

In my experience labs and acei go perfectly fine with peacocks and haps. They are about the only mbuna I'd mix though.

WoW!That's wonderful to here. So if one keep a breeding trio of two to three of different species genus in a tank of 75g upward one should have minimal fatalities.:)Mbuna is a very interesting breed.:) any trio suggestions?:)that works in the hobby other than the occasional Lab Rustie Acei formula.

Well, it's not too different, but you could replace any of thosse three species(labs, rusties acei) with cobalt blue zebras, Im doing labs, acei and cobalts currently and everyone is perfect, but I would think you could replace any of the three with cobalts and be fine!
