u can use aragonite sand. works great at buffering the ph.
u can use live rock. it'll serve as a decor, not a bio filter. rinse it off real well and decorate at will
whatever rock you want :)

WHy do you want "live rock" in your fresh water tank? Nothing will grow on it that wouldn't grow on any other rock...besides... a lot live rock is ripped off of coral reefs in the tropics...

Here's one of my N. halienthus. Took these pics Friday.

and I think this is the other one.... they're freaking identical, so it's hard to tell.... they're great fish. I love them. These are f1s. I could have bought the wild caught parents, but I didn't feel like spending 90/fish that day...

Teh colors of the live rock will rot away and tunr into grey. It can not survive freshwater hence iot is in the ocean.

If it's "live" rock won't all that stuff living on/in it die and rot in fresh water ? Isn't live rock expensive? I know aragonite sand is for no more than it would buffer water. Pool filter sand is $8 for a 50lb bag. Leslies pool supply.
People talk about that coral sand substrate buffering the water.Thats BS. The Instant ocean their making the salt water with does that.
Coral or limestone either one has to be ground into a powder to even mix into solution so it can dissolve.
You have to go back in with water of the same parameters you took out. If it's pH 8.2 coming out it needs to be 8.2 going back in.
