View Full Version : RE-SIZING PHOTOS which program?
It has been brought to my attention that some photos submitted to this site have not been re-sized for optimal space useage. I would like to help but need more info on the programs used by members to re-size their photos. Please let me know which programs you use!

well, i don't have photoshop or any other program right now, so i just use paint to do that it's fairly easy.
when you go to open the pic, right click and select 'open with' then 'paint'.
it will open up the pic, then at the top go to 'image', then click 'stretch/skew'. it will come up and the values will be at 100%. i always change the top two to 50 and 50 (you can do that as many times as needed).
then, to see what size the pic is at after the change, you go to 'image' and 'attributes'. i hope that all made sense :/.
i have to do that with every pic because my digicam takes really large photos.
i hope this helps you finz, if anything didn't make sense let me know.

It shouldn't matter the program, if people just pick the jpeg format "*.jpg" and change the quality to 50-70% that will accomplish a great reduction in file size and still let us see the image.

I use photoshop and just change the image size (under the image menu) to 500px wide, usually that is enough and then I don't have to change the quality of the jpeg nor do I have to lower the resolution to 72dpi.

Get the Image Resize program. You just have to right click on the photo and choose Resize Picture. You can do as many as you want with just one click.

What about folks who have their screen reolution at 800x600 and the picture is 1200+ pixels wide.
I guess my first post was a little misleading. The idea for Optimal size was to keep the file size and visual size small enough for dial-up users and those with older computers to still be able to view all the wonderful photos without scrolling sideways or waiting too long for pages to load.
I use photoshop as well, but for the web, I resize to max 600 pixels wide and reduce resolution to 72 ppi and chose save for web to further reduce file size to make it as small as possible without showing too many artifacts.
IMHO, the extra effort helps save server space and keeps the pages loading fast enough so folks with dial-up don't get bored.
Am I just into overkill? I was thinking of making a tutorial to help folks new to digital photography but the project is complicated by the abundance of different programs.
did anyone else try the Image Resizer in the link I posted?

Absolutely not overkill. It is a concern, and a great idea to make a tutorial. I am spoiled with cable - everything's so quick I forget what the ol' dial-up was like! :)
A lot of people don't know the first thing about what to do for sizing and don't understand the reasoning behind it. A thread to confront that is a great idea...
Good job, Finz! :D Okay, and I will bring my images down to 72dpi from now on.....
