I got a fish tank for Christmas, and decided to put Aficans in it. I read a bunch about setting up the tank and it looks good, so I went to the shop down th estreet and got a couple of Africans to start the cycle.

After I got the fish, I did some more investigation and realized that I should know better what type of Cichlids I have. The shop had them marked as yellow cichlids, so I figured they are lemons.

Now as they get settled in, I notice that one has two anal spots, which the male lemons are not supposed to have, and both have a little brown on their back. There are also some reflective spots ( one or two) near the gills.

I'm wondering if I got hybrids, I can't find anything that looks like them on-line. I'm hesitant to go back to the shop because now I realize he didn't know that much. (He had never heard of zebra cichlids, needless to say I won't go back there for future fish)

Can anybody help IDing these guys, I tried taking pics, but I can't get the digital camera to focus on them, plus they are still shy.

I have some pics of Neolamprologus leleupi on my web page. And as I recall if you go into the Gallery, boilermaker has some Leleupi on there to.

It almost sounds like you have Kenyi (look at woots kenyi under the gallery) or something. I think only Malawi Cichlids have egg spots... At least none of my Tangs have them...

I am doubtful that Neolamprologus leleupi can hybridize....At least I have never heard of it happening.

Infact I don't know of any Neolamps having egg spots ( I could be proved wrong)

Look at the pics and see if that resembles what you have....

If you have a digital camera take some shots so we can see them.

I think they may be Red Zebras, from looking around some more, the pics look alot like them, except for a couple brownish spots on the back.

If one has egg spots and one doesn't, does that mean that they are male and female?

Tried to take the pic, but it didn't come out too well.

Thanks for your help

Egg spots really don't tell you much about sex.

The only real way to tell in some species is by adult size and by venting tem.
