The photo caption is misleading since it designates the "Eureka Red" as a not-yet-formally-described species of the Aulonocara genus. Pictured is an Aulonocara jacobfreibergi of the selectively bred "Eureka Red" variety. I think it was with Overawed that I had a brief discussion of his "Albino Eureka Red" specimen. Someone (several people?) had told him that the AER is a hybrid. It is not. Moreover, while neither variety is known to occur in Malawi, IMO these peacocks are no more "unnatural" than the offspring of any naturally-occurring fish selected for breeding to produce (e.g.) "show quality" specimen.

Same as the OB Peacock...(not your fish) but the hybrid part. I think uless you get them wild caught they all are a little hybrid....

dragging this thread back from the dead... :)

All the Google'd images of the "Eureka Red" look nothing like the one I have in my tank. Mine is very orange with ice blue trim.... but then again, he's not mature yet, so maybe that will change?

When you think about it,all the fish in the lake were a hybrid at one point in time or another.I think mankind is speeding things up in an undesirable way though.
