Based on the shape of the head, the stripe on the face, the long horizontal stripe down the side from the eye, and what looks like turquoise on the fin rays that it is a baby salvini. I think the vertical stripes & blotchiness are just fry camoflage that will go away as it grows. Even looks like there may be some red spots on the belly.

Looks like Salvini to me too, but boy is that pic skewed.

it doesn't have any red on it and it is not at all agressive i had it with gourmi's of same size and they would beat him up he runs from anything in the tank even algea eaters when i got him one said he was a texas cichlid but he is not and another said he was a jack dempsey i have bought salvini from this place before they were smaller and had lots of red on them so i don't knowq i don't think he is a salvini but if any others know let me know i will try to get a better pic
Was that pic taken in a cup?
Fish looks very compressed.

I don't think that, at that size, you can discount the possiblity that it's a salvini because of lack of aggression. It's just a baby.
Obviously I don't know tho...salvini's just my best guess.

my best guess from that pic would be a H. carpintis. Aren't salvinis yellow?

I believe the females are a bright yellow, but that males can be more drab, almost an olivey yellow. I'll try to get a picture of my salvini. Unless he's a hybrid & I dont know it, he's not what I would call yellow at all & is covered with blue spangling, but otherwise all characteristics of a salvini. His main problem, is that he's got perpetual HITH. Had a really bad case of it when I got him in the mail & has not gotten any better. Maybe he would be more yellow if he were fully recovered????
Small salvini's might also not be as brightly colored yet. Here is a pic I found that looks, to me like the fish above.

I'm not very familiar w/ H. carpintis, Jason. Do they have they horizontal stripes on the head & face like the pic. above? If so, you're probably right.

the reason the pic is like that is because it was taken in a 29 gal
but the pic was too big to put on her so i mad they cam take smaller pic and i was at a friends house so i took it off the comp

ok, the fish in question does look like the salvini in the pic you posted crazy. I've never seen salvinis that look like that though which is why I was a bit confused. Every salvini I've seen has been a bright yellow.
H. carpintis is the 'other' texas cichlid. they can show vertical bars when stressed or showing aggression, but after looking again at the pic a carpintis' spots would probably be bigger.
It's very hard to say from the pic Big Whattie, but based on the pic Crazy posted of those salvini that could very well be what you have.

salvini and JD can't breed, can they?.
pretty much any CA cichlid can breed with any other CA cichlid. many CA's can and will breed with several different SA's as well.
Big Whattie, if that's the case it could very well be a texas...H. cyanoguttatum. If you can get a better pic it will be easier to help id the fish.

does these help
I was a little hesitant to guess based on your first pic, but the general look and body shape of your fish it looks like a Herotilapia multispinosa (Rainbow cichlid).
The color looks of though. Aequidens portalegrensis was my second guess but the caudal spot is not right.
Does it look yellowish?

he looks alot like the rainbow cichlid body shape and all not color though it could be because he is still a juvi but if it is a rainbow what would be good tank mates lots of color in the 5 to 6 inch range in a 29 gal? i was thinking of a firemouth

Now that I see a better shot of the head I agree w/ Rudy. Maybe as it gets more accustomed to the tank it will color up more. They are chamelions tho, or should I saw mood rings??? They change their colors quite a bit, but I would expect yours to become more yellow.
Here is a pic of one of mine.

Any smaller low to moderate aggressive neotropical cichlid would make a good tankmate. Acara, blood parrot, firemouth, sajica, most geophagus species, etc... Mine also do fine with non cichlids. I have LF rosy barbs & black skirt tetras in the same tank.
