I guess that I don't see a reason that there should any limit on how often you feed lettuce as long as you provide some variety in the other foods you give them. The floating debris does make the tank a little messy, so I don't do it all that often myself.

Get a greens clip that attaches to the glass or weight your lettuce down with a rock. Then, if they'll eat it "feed it to them"! Mix it up with different greens, romaine lettuce, spinach, etc.

I have had better results with leafy veggies on a clip (lettuce, spinach, etc) than with other veggies. I have never froze it first but I am going to give that a try, I have always done fresh in the past. I think the key to feeding is 1. variety and 2. proper amount of food. Any food that remains uneaten only adds to waste in a tank. It really becomes trial and error to find a balance that works for you and more importantly your tank!

Happy Holidays,

Try Zuccinni or cucumber. find a flat elogated rock and wrap a small rubberband around the sliver of Zuccini and cucomber and pebble and drop it in.

They will nibble on it for a few days.

Make sure you blanche or freeze (and defrost) the vegetables first. Terrestrial plants have cellulose in them that's hard for fish to digest. You can pour boiling water over the lettuce in a strainer or just put them in the freezer overnight, that'll break it down pretty well. Then clip them to the glass or rubber band to a rock. It might take them a couple of days to start eating it if they haven't had any before. Mine will start eating plant matter within seconds of introduction, but the first time took a couple of days.

I give my guys a blanched Romaine leaf and blanched zucchini three times a week.

This week I'm trying peas without the shells!

I tried some canned peas today. I squeezed the insides into the tank and there was total chaos! Everyone pushing and shoving and generally going crazy.

Accidentally some shells slipped into the water, but they got gobbled up too. My Bumblebee was a riot, he grabbed a whole pea and ran away with it. Everyone was chasing him, but he took it back to his cave to munch on it in peace.

Hi all,

Did the pea thing today as well, even my H. Fryeri got into it. I have been using blanched zucchini as a rule. Did the Romaine lettuce the other night and nobody touched it, not even the pleco! Go figure. I feed blanched spinach the night before a water change/vacuum; I find the spinach messy, gets in filters and all. So if done the pre-clean eve, I can clean up the mess.

Regards,

Matt

Do you think that my Syn's, that feed at night would like peas?

My goldfish love peas, i'll have to try them on my cichlids. What does blanched mean?

Blanched means to immerse in boiling water for a bit, softens up veggies, burst the cell walls, easier for fish to eat.

my fish are weird, they love love love cold LeSeur baby peas, and will not touch any other veggies. They just let the Romaine float around until I have to take it out.

Yeah,

I think mine are spoiled on peas and zucchini, they also leave the romaine alone. If I blanche a broccoli floret they will pick at the (I dont even know what to call them) the ity-bity parts.

Matt
