if you decide on the julies--are you going to have a species tank?(all julies), or are you planning to have other tankmates?

For the Julies once they reach mature size and start breeding they will pair up Male to Female. During this time it is possible that they will kill other non-paired fish. If you are going to get them small I would get 4-5 of them and once they get older you can move or sell the ones that don't form a pair. Keep in mind you will have to move the others once the pair is formed. They will be harrasssed and often killed.
You can also get other fish to put in your tank as well. You don't have to stick to one species. In my 75 gallon tank I have
Neolamprologus leupi 5-6
Altolaprologus compessiceps 2
Neolamprologus pulcher 4
Julidochromis Marlier 2
Julidochromis transcriptus 3
Julidochromis Regani 2
Cyphotilapia frontosa 1 (will need to be moved to a big tank eventually)
Actually it is often recommended that you keep these fish with a highly stocked community tank, just make sure your filtration can handle the fish. Over stocking your tank is a great way to lower the aggressiveness of some fish. It seems to help for both Malawi and Tanganyikan fish

When it comes to overstocking and species mixing there's a [b:689a20f242]HUGE[/b:689a20f242] difference between a 75g tank and a 30g tank.
I think one adult pair of Julies would be good with one other small Tang species added (maybe shelldwellers). I wouldn't worry about having two pairs of apistos in one tank, especially two different species, but that's not something I've kept before. They have a rep of being fairly peaceful. You could probably keep some tetras with them.

I was under the assumption common sense would be included. You can still use more than one species in a 30 gallon. And you can still over stock a 30 gallon with success. Just use common sense and don't go crazy thats all I am saying....
