I was wondering what the common malawi catfish are?

Synodontis nyassae is the only one I ever hear about in aquariums and it's not all that common. I've never seen one in an lfs before. They are available online though. There's others, but you don't see them for sale.

There's some sort of jumbo catfish that bumblebee cichlids clean in the wild.

I just got a couple Synodontis multipunctatus AKA Cuckoo Catfish I haven't seen them since I put them in my tank. Kind of a waste I am starting to think....

Hopefully they won't always be nocturnal.

they'll get more comfortable. if you can, get some more synos--they like to hang out in a crowd. they get quarrelsome, but do no damage.

I'd agree with SGM on the shy synos. Mine dissapeared into my 75 for a couple months and then started showing up every day or so....now ( 8 months later) they swim around all day with the other fish. I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen them more than 2 inches apart.

I hope moving them twice in the next two weeks doesn't start it all over again.

They seem nocturnal now. I just turned on the light after getting home and the Syno was out scavaging around. They do seem to help clean up after the cichlids a little.

I can't put my hand on "Konings Book of Cichlids and All the Other Fish of Lake Malawi," but I think there are only 7 catfish species in Lake Malawi, including the big Bagrus meridionalis that the bumble bees like to cohabit with. In addition to S. njassae, I've seen S. nebulosus for sale at the LFS.

Thanks. That should give me a start.

I need to get some good books..... I have had issues getting them locally. I think one of my LFS is getting the "Konings Book of Cichlids and All the Other Fish of Lake Malawi" one.

I will snatch that one up.

Perhaps we should have a suggested reading section....

I just got 4 Synodontis from my LFS. They are Malawi cats and less subvert than Synodontis Multi. Something to clean up after the other Malawi fish in that tank.

Cats are such good scavengers!

according to ad konings, syno nyassae is the only synodontis species in lake malawi. i saw a reference to syno nebulosus that indicated that it was from malawi, but i think that they were referring to the country malawi, not the lake.

From what I can tell I have Synodontis njassae, although she had a different name. I will call her on monday to get the name. All the Synodontis look alike.......

I hate when I leave the store and forget the name of the fish......

Call me forgetful....or worse

He does say that. At one of Ad's slide presentations on Lake Malawi cichlids in Guelph last November, he showed some cat pics including a great shot of what he referred to as "some sort of synodontis catfish." It was obviously S. petricola (fins outlined in white), and after the show I asked Ad why he'd been reluctant to identify it as such. He laughed and said "Because the catfish experts tell me that there are no petricola in Lake Malawi."

Being bugged to no end that I couldn't find a definitive list anywhere, I've been conferring with the cat people:

That is the list I have come across so far in both book research and good online sites. I hear most of these are part of the drainage area, and may not be in the actual lake.
