:? As far as tanks go . Should I go with one that is tall and build the rocks up in it ? Or is it more advisable to go with one that has some length to it rather than height?

With cichlids (and most fish) the more surface area the better. Get the longer tank. Get the biggest tank you can afford.

the one with more surface area(shorter but longer tank) is better. fish(especially african cichlids) stay near the bottom anyways, so the more room they have to swim around freely, the more they'll enjoy theyre tank.

the longer tank is best. if you build the rocks up high, the cichlids will use more of the upper area of the tank, especially if you have floating plant cover. be sure to get the kind of stand that has space underneath for a second tank! :sgypsy:

I have a 90 Gallon tall and it works well with tall rock work. I think it depends on the species you plan on putting in the tank.

Some stay close to the substrate and some like to swim to the top.

Rock work makes more surface area in a tank and gives fish a place to hide.
