i have a 55 with a jack dempsey and a GT and also a Salvini. All about one inch.(they are so cute). There is also 3 clown loaches and a striped rapheal cat. What i was wondering is could i toss in a fire eel? There are plenty of places to hide so im thinkin it would be ok.

hi seered
How big of a fire eel are you thinking? I have my fire eel in my 90 w/ a gt, jd, sevs..etc...the eel's about 8 inches long now (only about 4.5 when i got him last spring) He hides in his big hollow log & rarely comes out...it works for me...not sure if it's something i'm comfortable 'recommending' to anyone, but like I said, it does work here...
(keep in mind just how big fire eels get....I've read to 39"!!!)
Also-mine will not eat anything but live black worms...i've tried everything else...even 'fasting' him then trying new foods-no luck...he even disappeaed for 3 months ( I thought he had died or made the leap...) but lo and behold, he reappeared,..he was under the gravel..don't ask me what he ate for 3 months...????

Yea im thinkin about a 5 or 6 inch to start and i also have a 90 to move him into a comunity tank. There is a large driftwood piece for him to hide in. Im just worried about nippin on him.

mine don't seem to even know he's there (he really does hide A LOT)...give the eel a spot to hide from everyone..one that's only big enough for him

Nope try the other side of the US lol. I'm over here in sunny california :)! I just found a new LFS in my area!! always great to have a new LFS to go and browse! this one is huge though and they specialize in cichlids! I dont know how i lived without them for so long. Also you have a severum. What color a green or gold or even red? I saw the red severum online and fell in love but have only found them on aquabid and have never tried them. Are these fish rare?ok im done blabbing

my eel hides 98% of the time...except for sticking his head out...can't stand to miss what's going on....or a meal...
when he does make a full body appearance, i'm always shocked at how long he's gotten

yea his feeding is going ok but im worried because he only pics up like 3-5 worms but he searches for more but my cichlids vacuam them up faster than he can. Does your have problems with competing for food?

ok my eel goes nuts over ghost shrimp. He will snag like 3 at a time it's great. Im thinking of starting a hatchery anybody ever do this?

hey seered-(sorry for the delayed response)
Yes, my eel definately has some competetion for food-so what I do is get a turkey baster & squirt some worms directly in his log...no other fish can go in there...he thrilled not to have to come out!...mine would like ghost shrimp too, im sure...if he'd ever get a chance to get one!..i only fed them to my fish once and the JD ate them all!

hey seered-
Yah, those ghost shrimp are pricy! I bought 6 more yesterday in the hopes of 1 making it to the eel....fat chance...the sevs sucked them up before they knew what hit them...
i'll see what i can do about a photo-taking his pic is easier said than done!! ..i have to do water changes today/tomorrow...i'll see if i can catch a pic...
you have a pic of yours?
