They just do it when you want them to,provided they are fertile.
I pick their partners and place them in outdoor tubs and in matter of days you will see eggs and then free swimming fries.They make superb parents compare to common rams.

Don't know much about firemouth(beautiful fish,though) and
dwarf pike(love their coloration and skin texture).Firemouth sounds like a big fish and if pike is too aggressive,it's a definite no no.I place a couple in 55g with a number of large angels.
They get along fine.
