I was wondering could any on tell me if this is a female firemouth. I have one big male for sure, but I was hoping this was a female.

Greetings and salutations. Lindsey, it's a little difficult to tell what we have here. It seems to have the body shape consistent with the female meeki, (being a rounder shape), but there also appears to be a trailing dorsal filament... a common male trait that older females also can have. Behavior is another factor. Does it seem territorial?

Not really territorial to my other firemouth. It does to my pair of convicts though.

I think that only a male would stand up to the pair. Anyone disagree?

I think a better picture is needed. Cichlids are an odd bunch. Just because one particular fish acts one way doesn't mean the next one will act the same way. Usually only 'general' tendencies remain the same.

One may be docile the next may be jaws personified.... sounds a lot like people to me.

Hello everyone. Thanks for the replys. This fish has started to flare and circle my big male. Could this mean they are coming pair?

here is a new picture of it...

You may indeed have a pair forming. You say it circles the male, what is the males reaction to this?

no way to tell from those pics, make ur shutter speed faster, increase light, and get em when they arent swimming around fast.

I have a sucky camera. When the small one circles the male, they flare at each other.
