Anybody keep these Asian cichlids? I'm thinking of getting some next week. So far it looks like they stay 4" or less and are fairly peaceful, but I'd like to hear of any personal experiences. I want to add them to my planted tank that is primarily Asian species (barbs and loaches).
Thanks,

the only problem you've got there is that they are brackish water fish...i don't know if your planted tank can handle the salt.

i wonder what concentration of salt in water is required for a brackish water cichlid? mollies are brackish water fish but they can live and thrive in pure fresh water or full strength salt water (around 35 ppt). maybe its the same way with these fish

mollies can live in fresh water, but i don't think that they thrive in it.

I've kept and raised generations of black mollies in pure fresh water but there probably are advantages to adding salt to the water. the organism that causes "ich" probably wont live/reproduce at a certain concetration of salt in water. but then i wonder if theres a new set of organisms that live in the higher densities. i've kept black mollies in full strengh salt water but not for long periods. they looked healthy though (there are more interesting fish for full saltwater). i tried it for experimental purposes. they were terrified of a triggerfish that i had in there with them, but dont worry, the triggerfish had a bad case of ?a disease at the time. It could barely breath, much less move. The disease was cured and it sold off to a pet store.
about freshwater plants, i wonder at what density of saltwater that they begin to die off?

I wasn't too crazy about salting my planted tank so I ended up getting kribs instead. I'm still planning on trying orange chromides, but it's going to be a brackish tank when I do it. My aquarium club is getting involved in a Breeders Award Program and I've been thinking of doing a batch of chromides just to be different.
