Just today, i got 50 lbs of play sand from Home Depot. Would this be okay to put in with new world cichlids? Also, how much would this cover? thanks.

Yes that sand is just fine to use with the cichlids. Not sure how much 50lbs would cover but plenty I am guessing. You don't want the sand to be more than an inch deep. Dead zones are quickly built up in compacted sand.

Be sure to rinse and rinse... then rinse some more before you put it in your aquarium.

If you look at my softwater pics in my sig you will see some of that same sand in my quarantine tank.

Good luck

What are 'dead zones'?

If the sand compacts or is left stagnant without it being stirred up anaerobic bacteria can build up in those areas. Gasses can build up to the point to where they could possibly harm your fish. This is actually a topic for debate, but to be on the safe side just don't allow it to happen.

and how do you keep these dead zones from forming? just vacuum it like normal?

By keeping the depth of the sand shallow. MTS Snails help keep the substrate churned up as well. I stick my python down into the sand then pull it back up quickly to keep it all from compacting over time.
