Recently I've seen a bunch of Dimidiochromis compressiceps with this warty-looking bump on their "chin." The best way I can describe it is a "bump that looks like a bony-wart." I want to differentiate between the normal "lip bump" that every D. comp has, and what I am talking about. This bump looks like a pencil eraser, and is protruding from the fleshy area between the bottom jawbones.

After speaking with a few other hobbiests (none of us frequent the same geographic places, so it's widespread) they agreed they have seen numerous instances as well. None of us recalls seeing the bump on an adult male, but we all know for sure we've seen it on females.

Then again, I'm almost certain I've seen females without the bump. So, you can see how I'm confused. I want to know if this is "normal," if it's a geographical (which part of the lake) variant, if it's a widespread disease, or possibly another alternative I have not considered? I did a search for "dimidiochromis compressiceps chin bump" and found nothing. I thought surely if it was a sexually dimorphic (normal) feature, somebody would have described it on the net by now.

I, personally, find the bump unattractive. If you could assure me that it is normal, It would probably grow on me. Any insights would be appreciated.

By the way, I have seen comps with the chin bump at the shedd aquarium in chicago, and in two local fish stores in the Baltimore MD area. A friend mentioned seeing "lots" in Virginia as well.

My Male Comp has something that could be described at that. Do you have any pictured that i could look at to see if it is what i am worried about?
