I currently have a 55 gallon tank of south american cichlids in my room. I am most likely starting a 20 gallon long in my den but am debating what kind of fish to put in it? Africans, community, or one or two south americans. Any ideas of what would make a cool looking tank would be greatly appreciated.

A colony of shelldwellers from Tanganyika or a pair of West African riverine cichlids would be my first choices. Dwarf cichlids from SA would be another possibility.

I agree with Jonah get a group of shell dwellers. Out of all my tanks my eyes are drawn to the one with my Multi's in it the most. The displays and constant bulldozing are just facinating. Not to mention the fry are in demand.

I have a 20L community tank at work. Assortment of Tiger Barbs and Gourami's dwell therein :ok:

I would go with some shellies too but it also depends on your water is it soft or hard? Do you want to buffer your water etc..

If I were you I would get some Rams or something like that, being that your water is already suited to American cichlids.
P.S. Do you have any plans on upgrading that 55 of yours? If not you are going to run into some problems pretty soon.
