You could try a pair of Cons, FireMouths, Jewels, or maybe Blue Acaras.

You could probably look at Rams also.

so... could i put a pair of cons and a pair of firemouths in a tank together, or two pairs of cons in a 40 gallon?

Maybe two pairs of cons in a 40. But they will breed and watch out they get crazy.

yeah, right now i have a pair of cons in there with a few white clouds and they seem to be getting along just fine. i'm hoping they're a male and a female (one has long fins that come to a point, and the other has shorter rounded fins, but they're still small)

Look for orange on the belly, that'll be the female. They get the color pretty small.

Cons are cool fish. They breed like crazy, also they are very interesting fish, I love them,I have always liked them since I was a wee lad, and I am glad to own some now. Try cons. any red or pink, rounded fins= female. pointy fins very aggressive possibly male. I say possibly, cause sometimes I cant tell but what ever. My favorite con is a blue con, that I own. I hoped it was a male, but now I think female, She's still my favorite regardless.

Sexing cons is really, really easy salty, just look for red on the belly. Red/pink scales = female.
I wouldnt go for the Firemouths..
Try this: 1 male convict, 2 Blue rams, 1 Blue Acara and 1 Jewl..
keep an eye on the con as he will be the king of the tank for a while, well untill the jewl and acar grow up.

poet8102, I know the pink means female, but I have an interesting match up, ready. 3 inch blue convict, fairly pointed fins, very hard to tell any pink even under very close observation. Now the other is, ready for this a 3 inch, I believe male pink convict. The only reason I say male is because its fins are very long almost longer than its tail. Also it is extremely aggressive. Although, only recently the pink has been guarding the month old fry, while the blue just kinda chills in the general area.-salty

I REALLY like the shell dwelling cichlids. LOOK INTO THEM! They are the FUNNEST fish to watch that ive ever seen.
NA poet8102 is rite all convicts with orange/red/pink are females. Females are can be just as aggressive and they do have long fins both sexes do in some cases. My green terrors are male and female and the fins on the male aren't all that much different just the colour.
