Try dwarf puffers. You will love them. I keep them for my daughter in a 5. No cichlids should go in there.

There is one cichlid that would work in a 5 gallon tank in a small group situation, Neo lamprologus multifaciatus aka the Multi Shell Dwellers. If cichlids are what you are after I wouldn't put more than one of any other dwarf type cichlid in that small of a tank.

It really just depends on what you have in mind.

Here is a link with a little info about Multi's.

Aren't puffers toxic? Eewww! I wouldn't want something poisonous in my room. Could I keep a balloon ram in a 5 gallon?

Are you planning to eat the fish in your 5 gallon tank?

Rudy's correct.
Dwarf puffers would work great. You could put 4 in there without a problem. They are fun little fish that are very aggressive. My wife has a few in a tank and they, like most other puffers are extremely aggressive. Dwarfs are freshwater, so you won't need to worry about salt. They love frozen bloodworms. On the subject of their aggressiveness, we put two albino corys in the tank to help keep it clean and those little boogers tore all of the fins off of the corys. They have a ton of personality and will really socialize with you once they know you are the one who feeds them. Good luck if you go that way. As far as the toxicity, the tetradotoxin that puffers produce is so miniscule in the dwarfs, that you would not have a problem. As Rex said, just don't eat them. I put my finger in my wifes figure eight tank to see if their bite would hurt. Well, the bite did not hurt, but the tip of my finger was numb for about 30 minutes.

I have ottos in with mine and the puffers could care less. They completely ignore them.

Oh, so they're only toxic if u eat them?
