Hello again, im wondering whats the best type of rock if i wanted to be as realistic as possible for a malawi tank? Many of the pics I have seen make it seem like there just large smoothed boulders? but maybe its just me.

Yes!!! Thats it Any ideas on where i could get them? would rocks from the yard(after bleaching and cleaning obviously) be ok?

I never use bleach I just boil em.You could use them from the yard, but I recomend you check some of the local landscape supply yards. The rock ther is usually pretty clean already. You can also find some nice rounded pieces in rivers look in the shallow rappids, but be carefull those river rocks are very slippery lol. Don't use anything with metal content look for rust.

Would pool filter sand work as a substrate for a malawi tank?

Yes swimming pool filter sand works just fine.
