I have a juvenile melanochromis johanni that seems to be choking. I feed it peas on Thursday and it held a large piece in its mouth. It seems to still have the pea in its mouth. The fish is the runt of the brood and may be too small to swallow it and it won't or can't spit it out. The fish is very skinny. Also, I moved the tank today and there may be too much oxygen in the tank. All the fish are lethargic and won't eat. They seem to be breathing heavily. There are tiny bubbles clinging to the sides of the tank. Any advice?:bawl:

Hmmmmm...don't know what to tell you about the choking fish. Anyone?

As for there being "too much oxygen" in the water, I don't think that's possible. The small bubbles on the side of the tank are probably just from the tank being bounced around a bit when you moved it.

If they appear to be gasping for air, there isn't enough oxygen, but I don't know why that would be from just moving the tank. What are your tank parameters? Have you tested everything since you moved it? Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates...what is the temp of your tank? When was the last time you changed the water? How often are you changing it?

It's possible your fish are just temporarily stressed from moving the tank with them in it. I'd be more concerned if they still aren't eating tomorrow.

By the way, you should never move a tank full of water. The tank isn't made to handle the pressure of the water sloshing back and forth, and you could cause a small crack in the seems or worse - have a major disaster on your hands. Always remove all of the water before moving a tank - even small ones.

I had a Koi once who swallowed a pea whole and got it stuck in his gullet. I had to take him out and hold him in the net while I gently pushed on his gills until the pea popped out. This pea accidentally got tossed in with the shell still on (even though the peas are cooked and canned, the shells still take an eternity to disintegrate.)

You might try this, if nothing else works.

the people who feed their fish peas usually take the skin off the peas by squeezing them...that should prevent "choking".
