View Full Version : What other pets do people keep?
I was a reptile guy till I met my wife. Now it is fish and dogs.
Right now we just have a Bouvier and my fish.
I have had everything possible. Everything but cats, and rodents.
When I met my wife I had a 6 foot Nile Monitor named Tony. Very tame, and very cool. Put his jaws around my neck one day when he was sitting on the couch. He had an eye infection and was a touch grumpy. and figured that it wasn't a good idea to have living with me. He went to the zoo. I should mention he did not hurt me, but got me thinking what if he did that to someone else. 6 foot monitor is a lot to handle.
I have a very rare Giant Australian Blue tongue skink. Roxy. Had her for 15 years and sadly had to give her away when my lab lived with us as he was destined to get her. Still miss her.
Also had a 2 foot across the back mata-mata turtle that I also gave to the Calgary zoo. Not much personality and I had him stuck in a small tank. I could not sell him as it is weird up here. Not illegal to have, but you can't sell a lot of reptiles.

5 dogs and two birds (parrakeets). A mutt, a jack russel terrier, a chiauhua, a miniature pinscher, and a long-haired daschund. NO, cats. When I was younger I had a gerbil and my brother had a hamster. My bro's got a 6 foot red eye python and a couple of iguanas. My dad had a pet rat - he was named rat-rat. My brother-in-law had a turtle. Same deal in New Jersey- can't buy but you can own.

dust bunnies.
Aside from the fish, I have two miniature dachsunds, which most of you have probably seen the pics of in my folder. When I lived with my parents, we had a total of 5 dogs. Two miniature dachsunds, a pit bull mutt, a dachsund/terrier mutt, a dachsund/golden retriever mutt (the dachsund was the momma). I have had all kinds of pets over the years, including rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, box turtles, red-earred turtles, and several snakes, including a large water snake, and a water mocassin (my parents didn't know about them). About a year and a half ago I got my most expensive pet ever, Amber, my wife. :D

I'll keep with the Doxie theme. I have three mini dachshunds, two shep mixes (step carefully in my backyard) and more tanks than I care to mention 8)

I used to keep Tarantulas and Scorpions and had plans to get a couple of Pythons but moved into a new flat about a year ago and was told by the landlord that i wasn't allowed to keep anything that could escape and bite so it's strictly fish only for me. I was also going to get a Harris Hawk but ill wait untill i move into another flat where the rules are a bit slacker.

A Siberian Husky named Shadow we got through a adopt-a-pet program at Petsmart. Best purchase I ever made in there. We also have a Chihuahua named Charger, named after my favorite football team. His color is brown and white, so he looks like a Beagle puppy that doesn't grow up. :)

mac, i'm sure that you are a lovely person, but i am very glad that you live on the other side of the pond, so that i don't have to worry about having you for a neighbor!

I take it you're a bit Arachnaphobic then? You should maybe get a Goliath Birdeater.

Mac: You'd love it here! During certain parts of the year you can count the tarantulas by the crackles under your tires as you drive. You can literally see hundreds of the spiders crossing roads if you're lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. The tarantulas here seem smaller than the ones I grew up around in California. They might be a different species.
I've always had a fascination for scorpions, but my wife puts up with enough already.

Have you seen the new Harry Potter movie? I took my kids to see it Sunday and spiders had a big role in the storyline. One was the size of a 2 story house.

Imagine the look on the doctors face if someone turned up in his surgery on the monday morning saying "Yeh..i was out on saturday night, met this really nice person, had a 1 night stand with them but found this in my pants. Do you have something for it?"
