View Full Version : Enough Filtration?
I have a 29gal tank that I'm cycling with a Regent 2--40 power filter.
I would like to start six juvenile psuedotropheus saulosi in this tank.
Is this enough filter?

Is that the penguin 300 size Regent? Regardless, I would add a sponge filter driven by an air pump.
I have a 20g with a Regent 300 size and a small Penguin bio wheel 150 and 2 sponge filters.
I believe in a lot of filtration lol.

Hey Hybrid/Watcher,
I've got what I think is about 35 gallons, with 21 fish in there...14 electric yellows and six white (labs? sorry...don't know the name of them but). Most of them are not fully grown and I'm using that Eheim 2217 that I mentioned in one of my posts.
Edit: forgot to mention 1 BIG pleco as well.
Is this too little or too much filtration?

Your filtration question aside... Thats A LOT of fish for a 35gal...regardles of how well you filter that tank, I think you will lose a lot of fish to aggression/disease as they get bigger. For the present, you are probably "ok" as long as enough hiding places are present. It sounds like a great color combination though, I'm sure they are really "busy" in there!
I dont believe that you can "over filter" a fresh water aquarium, especialy w/cichlids. Only counting my "hang on back" filters' gph I turn my tank water over more than 10x per hour. The more surface area you give for benificial (ie amonia,nitrate/'ite" eating) bacteria, the better your water quality will be. Media selection in your filter(s) can also make a difference in the effectiveness of your filtratrion, I recomend using both zeolite and activated carbon.
does any one have any experiences with "over filtration"?

My theory to it is that... you can never really over or under filtrate an aquarium. Let's say I'm running one Aquaclear 500 in a 55G. If there are 3-4 mature fish in the tank, it would not necessarily be under-filtered, but you would have a lot of maintenance and water changes to do with heavy supervision of the tank. You learn what is adequate and what is too much through experience, IMHO. Personally, I "over-filter" my 75 as I am running an Eheim 2216 with and Emperor 400 and an Aquaclear 500.

I would add a AC 300-or a HOT magnum pro with bio-wheel
