Just saw a few days ago, that my female YL ( only female it seems  )
had a mouthful of new fry! I could see their faces poking out of her mouth ! :P It took a lot of coaxing to get her into her new tank. As soon as she got in, she spit out a least 7 fry, which is good for her seeing as how this would be her 4th time and she only has 2-4 each time normally. She may have let out more when i was not home but i am hopeful by the end of the month, I'll have a tank full of new YL

Congratulations - have you considered stripping her? You'll get bigger numbers if you do.

Not to hijacking this thread, but I have a couple questions. My female is on her second set of fry. Now, I have never had any intentions on breeding, but it just kinda happened. The first batch I'm not sure how many fry were there. I just saw these tiny fish there one day. Well they getting bigger, so I just let them go. I decided to set up a small tank and move them to it. I gave 4 away to a friend and moved 7 to the tank. My question is, how many fry does the female have at a time? She just spit more out again because I could see 2 new ones a week ago and today I count 6???

The amount of fry a brooding fish has depends on the breed itself. What fish keeps having the babies?

I think it the light colored striped one in this pic.

I'm not all that good at ID's. But most cichlids are from 10-30 normally ( although some can go to 60 and jewels 150+), more experience the more fry they have. If it's her second, I wouldn't hope for more than 15 or so. Depends on how many she had her first brood. I'm sure some other's will chip in soon :) Hope I helped. And it's best if you move the female holding to a new tank, to have lots of rocks and not have the light on that often as not to freak her out good luck :ok:

O.k. I am really bad with I.d. and all the different breeds. I am thinking this is just a common breed. I am very new to this and hope to get good at it. Any good books to help?

When I get my 175 gal up and running, how do I know what cichlids I can put together in the tank??? I want a happy fish environment. No fighting :duel:

It's as simple of looking up one of the cichlids and if you go to a profile page on it, it generally gives a list of tankmates and you can post a new thread so that other, more experienced people can see it :P
